Tainted Love: The Astronaut Love Triangle That Led to Adult Diapers and Battery

"Astronaut Lisa Nowak drove 900 miles from Houston, Texas to Orlando, Florida wearing a NASA-issue adult diaper to confront her astronaut boyfriend's new girlfriend. Nowak's goal was to kidnap and potentially murder the other woman. She was arrested for attacking the woman instead. 

 

The incident became tabloid fodder and late-night talk show fodder, and inspired the 2019 movie Lucy in the Sky starring Natalie Portman as an astronaut. However, the diaper detail was omitted from the movie because the filmmakers felt it would reduce Lisa to a punch line. 

 

Astronauts wear diapers in flight that use a sodium polyacrylate polymer to absorb urine and turn it into a gel. The polymer is sandwiched between layers of materials that remove moisture and keep astronauts dry."
